Down, but not out.

At least not quite yet, anyway.  But I think I may start posting here again.

RIP, Dr. George Tiller

A suspect is in custody: ...a bombmaker, tax protester, member of the "sovereignity" movement, anti-abortion zealot and Operation Rescue member: the arrested suspect manages to fit every stereotype of right-wing militia teabagger..

Can the pretense be dropped now, please?  Operation Rescue, and other organizations of its ilk, are nothing but breeding grounds of domestic terrorism.  If people were being detained on suspicion of potential terroristic activities based only on their religion's potential for violence and extremism, then it's past time that those who belong to these fundamentalist  "pro-life" groups be investigated on suspicion of same.

There was an increase in pro-life terrorism during the Clinton years, and now history looks to be repeating.  There were even hints being tossed around in the media recently, to the effect that concern was rising over the potential for homegrown terrorism coming from those of the far-right fringe completely unhinged by Obama's election.  (During the Bush years, the right loved to toss around phrases like "Bush Derangement Syndrome" to dismiss progressives' reactions to GWB's policies; but I'm sure you'll never hear any of them cop to the obvious "Obama Derangement Syndrome" that had so many of them frothing like rabid wombats on day one of the new administration!)

According to the Associated Press, the Attorney General is now dispatching US Marshals to protect clinics and doctors.  Perhaps this will be the necessary impetus for President Obama to make signing the Freedom of Choice Act into the "priority" he once claimed (and later denied) it to be.

God Hates You!

I think the message on the local Southern Baptist Church's marquee this morning was the most outrageous (in every sense of that word) one yet:

"To God...My Best Is Like Rotting Garbage."

I can't even snark something that twisted.  Seriously; that is so many kinds of wrong that it deserves a moment of silent contemplation.

I'm not sure who is sicker: the person who in all good conscience preaches such bile, or the seeker who in all good faith believes it.

Captaining the Failboat

Unfortunately, Obama acquired a sinking ship: an aging, badly-maintained vehicle taking on water from dozens of different leaks.  He and his crew are bailing as fast as they can, but new leaks keep springing up, and the passengers are agitated and rowdy, which only makes things more difficult.  Some have already gone overboard, and others probably will.  I'm sitting tight for now, but looking about rather nervously for a lifeboat.  I've heard rumors that some exist, but haven't found one yet.

Cross-posting, or posting at all

I think I'm going to start cross-posting the spiritual stuff here and at Polyvalent Logic.  Why?  Because I can.  And because the only mono- in my life seems to be in the relationship realm; elsewhere I'm polytheist, and polyblogulous as well.  (I've got a LiveJournal account too, you know, as well as a MySpace account I never look at and a Twitter account I signed up for in a moment of curiosity then promptly abandoned.  There are only so many hours of the day I can spend in nonproductive off-goofing.  The rest of the time I need for sleeping.)

And if you've been wondering--all two of you who might actually still stop by here occasionally--just where my ass has been lately, it's been in the doldrums with the rest of me.  The proper name for What's Wrong With Me is dysthymia.  I'm functional, just not much fun.  :P

So the entries here may still be sporadic, but as they say, acknowledging that you have a problem is half the solution.  Writing has always been my best therapy, but don't worry; I won't bog the blog with emo shit and navel gazing and self-loathing blather.  TM here will continue to carry the usual--rants, wry observation, and lolcats.  Hey, it could be worse.

"I'm not a monster."

The real monster is not this woman, recipient of the world's fourth face transplant.  The real monster is the evil bastard, once her husband, who shot her, causing horrific disfigurement and damage.  He got seven years in prison; her sentence is for life.  Justice?  Not so much, but at least her world must be looking a bit brighter now.

Is it FINALLY spring?

funny pictures of cats with captions

That about sums it up.  And even though it's chilly and grey and damp today, it's still an improvement; because it's also turning greener and lusher by the day.  The soft little leaflets are filling in the bare branches, tulips and hyacinths and the last of the daffodils are riotous with color, and the sparse browned grasses of winter have at last been replaced with the thick living carpets of spring.  I'm glad.  I'm gladder than I can say.  It's been a grim sort of winter, and after about three solid years of grim a little cheer is looking very good indeed!

Oh, for fuck's sake

I was reading at a message board with a higher-than-usual concentration of "conservatives," one of whom responded to a person's news of a job loss with something along the lines of "oh, hawhawhaw, atthere's some 'change we can believe in' ain't it?!"

For fuck's sake.  The man's been in office a little over a MONTH.  He's barely had time to change his socks, let alone the world.

(Which is in the shape it's in, I might point out, because of the policies implemented by YOUR precious GWB and company.  So have yourself a helping of STFU and if you can't add something productive to the discourse, stay out of it.  Kthxbai.)

Hiraikotsu at the ready.  I think I hate these fuckers worse now than I did when their guys were at the helm; if they were nasty little brutes then, they're already starting to show just how vicious and vile they truly can be.  (Above example nowhere near the level of filth of which I speak.  That was just a mere annoyance; the truly bad stuff makes me so apoplectic with fury that I can't even comment coherently on it.)

Odd and disappointing

I had no idea until today that the young man dancing in that striking Doublemint gum commercial was a young hip-hop/pop star called Chris Brown.  He's apparently the boyfriend of Rihanna, another young pop star, and allegedly had an altercation with her before the Grammys that led to his being arrested and her going to the hospital.  From what I've read, he's had an entirely clean record and reputation up to this point, not exactly a gangsta thug.  It's all very strange, and disappointing.  I'm no fan of Rihanna's--I really can't stand her type of music--but I loved that gum commercial, and the beautiful dance moves of the handsome young man with the sweet smile.
